In Here Comes The Boom 2012, Kevin James plays a high school biology teacher who looks to become a successful mixed-martial arts fighter in an effort to raise money for the music department, where costar Henry Winkler’s( ” The Fonze” for us middle-aged folk) job is in jeopardy due to budget constraints. James plays the role of Scott Voss high school science teacher, who earlier in his teaching career was “Teacher of the Year”. Over several years of teaching, somehow Scott has lost his way in the teaching of his students. He just sits at his desk and reads a newspaper instead of teaching the children.
During a teachers meeting it is announced there’ll be cutbacks and when put on the spot Mr. Voss says he will come up with the money in the budget to help save Mr. Streb’s job. All the while Scott Voss (Kevin James) did not think he would have to come through, until Salma Hayek’s character, of course the sexy school nurse, holds his feet to the flames. James feeling guilty because Mr. Streb has been teaching for over 30 years and has just found out he’s going to be a father, signs up to teach US citizenship courses. This is where he meets his student Neko, (Bas Rutten), that needs some tutoring and also gives him the idea that he can make a lot of money in mixed martial arts, losing matches. Neko, (Bas Rutten), says that he will train him and try to get him matches in MMA for some personal tutoring for his citizenship classes. Bas Rutten is high-energy and off-the-wall, and makes a nice addition to the film. During the course of his matches, win or lose, Voss finds that he has a massive amount of support from the school, students and faculty. The film has its violent side, but there’s not a lot of blood, just a lot of bruises and a lot of physical, hand-to-hand combat and wrestling. There is some profanity in the movie, but it is used sparingly. In Here Comes the Boom 2012, there is a strong message of support for arts education in schools and family/teacher cooperation in the schools.
